Why garage doors come off track
- A bump from a car or snowblower. Even a slow tap can bend a track or knock rollers loose.
- A broken or slack cable. When a lift cable fails on one side, that side drops and the rollers can twist out.
- A broken spring. The door loses its balance and can bind or jump the track. See broken spring repair.
- Worn or broken rollers. Old rollers can crack, wobble, or seize.
- Loose track brackets. Vibration loosens hardware over time, and a track that shifts out of line lets rollers escape.
- Something in the way. A bin, bike, or shovel in the door's path can push it sideways as it closes.
Signs of a cable problem
- A cable hanging loose or coiled on the floor
- One side of the door lower than the other
- Frayed or rusty strands near the bottom corners
- The door jerks or tilts as it moves
What not to do
- Don't keep running the opener. It will keep pulling on a door that can't travel straight.
- Don't hammer the track or pry rollers back in.
- Don't loosen cables, bottom brackets, or spring hardware. Those parts can release suddenly.
- Don't leave kids or pets near a tilted door.
Realignment vs. new parts
Many off-track doors can be re-hung with the existing track once the technician takes the tension off, straightens minor bends, and resets the rollers. A new track makes more sense when the metal is kinked, torn at a bolt hole, or badly bent from impact. Cables that unwound or snapped have to be replaced or re-wound correctly on their drums. The technician should also look for the underlying cause, such as a worn roller or a spring problem, so the door doesn't come off again next week.
