When it's an emergency
Request help right away (choose "ASAP") if:
- The door is stuck open and you can't secure the garage or the house.
- A car is trapped inside and you need it.
- A spring snapped (loud bang, gap in the coil) or a cable broke and the door is crooked.
- The door came off its track or is hanging at an angle.
- The door was hit by a car or snowblower and won't close.
Until help arrives: keep people, pets, and cars out of the door's path, unplug the opener if you can reach it safely, and lock the door between the garage and the house. On a cold night, close interior doors to keep heat in the living space.
Door won't open in the cold: a quick winter checklist
Minnesota winters are hard on garage doors. Angi's Minneapolis cost guide says cold winters can freeze springs and stiffen tracks, and that road salt can corrode metal parts faster. Before you assume the worst, check these safe, simple things:
- Is the bottom seal frozen to the floor? Snowmelt from cars can refreeze under the door overnight. Don't keep pressing the button: the opener can strain, strip gears, or pull the seal off. Gently free the seal with a plastic scraper or putty knife, or warm it with a hair dryer. Avoid pouring hot water, which can refreeze and make it worse. Then clear the ice and water from under the door.
- Are the safety sensors blocked? The two small "photo eyes" near the floor on each side of the door stop it from closing if something is in the way. Snow, ice, frost, or a shovel leaning against the wall can block them. Wipe them clean and make sure the lights on both are steady.
- Is the opener working hard but the door barely moves? Cold can stiffen grease on rollers and hinges. If the door is heavy to move and you also heard a bang, a spring may be broken: stop and request help.
- Does the remote work but not the keypad (or vice versa)? Cold weakens batteries. Try a fresh battery before anything else.
- Is the wall control in "lock" or "vacation" mode? Many openers have a lock button that disables remotes.
If none of that helps, or you see a broken spring, a loose cable, or a door off its track, stop using the door and request help. Choose "Door won't open or close" in the form and mention the cold.

My door won't open and it's freezing out. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. The bottom seal may be frozen to the floor, or snow and ice may be blocking the safety sensors. Check those first (see the winter checklist on this page). If you heard a bang, see a gap in a spring, or a cable is loose, stop and request help.
My car is trapped. Can I just pull the emergency release?
Only if the door is fully closed and the springs and cables look intact. With a broken spring the door is very heavy and can slam down. If you're not sure, leave it and choose "ASAP" in your request.
Can a company come at night or on the weekend?
Some companies offer after-hours service and some don't. The company will tell you its availability when it calls. We can't promise a time.
